‘Gartang Gali’, a heritage wooden walkway built almost 10,500 feet above sea level in the Nelong valley of Uttarkashi district. It was lined with wooden planks many of which had got damaged over the years since the Nelong valley had been declared off-limits after the India-China war of 1962 and was only open for restricted tourism in 2015.

Incidentally, Austrian climber Heinrich Harrer had also escaped to Tibet from the British interment camp at Dehradun where he was housed during World War II through this route.

The 105-meter-long bridge that is believed to have been built by Pathans from Peshawar was an important link on the ancient trade route to Tibet that passed through the valley.

It was lined with wooden planks many of which had got damaged over the years since the Nelong valley had been declared off-limits after the India-China war of 1962.
The pathway was cut into the hard rock face of a vertical cliff a few hundred metres above the Jadh Ganga river and was large enough to accommodate fully-laden yaks. The route greatly helped reduce both travel time and the risk of loot during trade. The trip to the walkway which can be reached after a 2-km arduous trek was organised by the Uttarkashi district administration in association with adventure tour operator ‘Where Eagles Dare’.
